New scholarship launched in partnership with General Sir John Monash Foundation

June 19, 2023

The Weizmann Institute of Science has launched a new scholarship in partnership with the General Sir John Monash Foundation, with applications now open and closing on 14 July 2023.

The Weizmann-Monash Scholarship seeks applications from excellent Australian science students to continue their post graduate studies at the prestigious Feinberg Graduate School (FGS) at the Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel.

Conceived by Jillian Segal AO, International board member of the Weizmann Institute of Science and Chair of Sir John Monash Foundation, the Scholarship will be offered to either an MSc or PhD student, beginning in September and October 2024.

The program is aimed at matching global distinction at the Weizmann Institute with the best Australia has to offer in student applicants, while helping young researchers build networks within the world of science in Israel and around the world

Providing excellence in research projects in all scientific disciplines, as well as course studies conducted in English, the FGS educates toward international leadership in scientific research and discovery.  FGS has established its reputation as a multidisciplinary centre where students strive to reach the highest levels of knowledge and understanding, under the guidance of creative and original researchers in the natural sciences and mathematics.

Boasting Nobel and Turing Award laureates, the Weizmann Institute of Science, based in Rehovot, Israel, is comprised of 250 experimental and theoretical research groups across five main faculties – Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Computer Science, and Physics. Insights that emerge from the Weizmann Institute’s laboratories help provide a fundamental understanding of the biological, chemical, and physical world, and lead to advances in medicine, technology, and the environment. The Weizmann Institute scientists conduct bold and boundless science at its best, unleashing ingenuity for the benefit of humanity.

The General Sir John Monash Foundation was established in 2001 and provides graduate scholarships to young Australians who demonstrate outstanding leadership potential and who wish to study overseas.

Sir John Monash was a remarkable Australian who believed that education is not given for individual benefit, but for the higher duties of citizens who seek to advance society.  With such aligned goals and values, we are excited to facilitate the continued education of brilliant Australian Science graduates to study at the Weizmann Institute and to build lifelong networks within the world of science in Israel and around the world.

“John Monash himself would be extremely pleased to support graduate education at the Weizmann Insitute of Science,” said Segal.

“Monash believed in excellence and innovation, and the Weizmann Insitute, in particular, exhibits both of these attributes. Any student fortunate enough to study there will undoubtably have a wonderful, life-changing experience.”
