Rhodes scholarship for former Weizmann Summer School scholar First Garvan-Weizmann Symposium held in Israel

Two-time Weizmann Summer School scholar, Matt Goh, is heading to the University of Oxford in England. After receiving the University Medal and graduating with First Class Honours in theoretical physics at the Australian National University (ANU), he was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship to undertake a DPhil in Physics at Oxford.

At the end of 2019, the Garvan-Weizmann Centre for Cellular Genomics held its first scientific symposium in Israel. This coincided with the Weizmann Institute of Science’s Annual General Meeting of the International Board where many Australian representatives were present. The visit was a great success, strengthening relationships and inspiring all involved.

The second Garvan-Weizmann Showcase held at The Garvan Institute of Medical Research provided an impressive update on the Partnership and how far it has come. Some guests were fresh from Israel where the Weizmann Institute of Science’s 70th anniversary was celebrated in addition to the first Garvan-Weizmann Symposium.

Weizmann researchers have made bacteria in their lab swear off sugar, stop eating their normal solid food, existing instead on carbon dioxide (CO2) in their environment. This CO2 munching bacteria could contribute to new and future carbon-efficient technologies and help in the battle against climate change
